Dr. Amin Hammad is a Full Professor at the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE). He is the Director of the Cyber-Physical Construction and Infrastructure Systems Lab and the Co-Director of the Center of Innovation in Infrastructure Engineering and Management (CICIEM) at Concordia University. Before joining Concordia, he held faculty and visiting positions at Nagoya University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Tokyo. His research is recognized internationally in automation in construction and infrastructure management systems using advanced methods in remote sensing, simulation, optimization, machine learning, and robotics. Hammad has several successful collaborative research projects with the industry. He has edited one book, published eight chapters, and about 300 papers in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He has supervised over 70 PDFs, PhD, and MASc students at Concordia and Nagoya University, Japan.
Construction projects can significantly benefit from new technologies to improve the management of productivity, health and safety, delay claims, etc. One of these technologies is 4D simulation based on Building Information Modeling (BIM), which can be developed at the early stage of planning and then gradually refined in the subsequent phases of construction and operation of the facilities. The 4D simulation will go through several Levels of Development (LODs) and should be updated to reflect the changes (i.e., as-planned, as-built, and as-is models). These evolving 4D models can be considered as the Digital Twin (DT) of the constructed facility, which is the virtual replica of the facility reflecting all the changes in the physical space and providing a tool for simulating different scenarios. This talk will review our recent research for developing DTs in construction and infrastructure management.
